micro blogging- august

Since I haven’t blogged much, I thought I’d grab the momentary updates from twitter and put them all in one place. I think it would be great to create a web aggregator that could draw from twitter, Fb and blogs to create a chronological, personal journal all in one place. Anyone heard of such a thing? I think tumblr can do something close, since it’s integrated with twitter.

Cucumber tomato salad

This season I only planted three tomato plants to keep pace with very little demand for tomatoes in our house. I am the only one that likes raw tomatoes. I generally grow medium size varieties, because its sometimes hard to manage those giant, heavy ones (cages falling over, etc.). This time I found a couple of heirlooms that I hadn’t grown before, and they have proved to be rewarding. Elberta Girl is a beautiful stripey variety that is just a bit bigger than a cherry tomato. They have a sturdy skin and plenty of seeds. They are fun to look at and are good for salads and that kind of thing. The Golden Girl was my surprise favorite this year. They are the perfect size, have few seeds and a gorgeous golden color. They taste great, with firm flesh and a tart, fresh quality. I love them. I also grew a popular hybrid, Celebrity, and its kicking out the 6-8 oz. fruit, which is rather large. I have found that the smaller the tomato, the earlier it seems to ripen. The Elbertas were the first one’s ready (two weeks ago) and the Celebrity just redded-up this week.

One of my favorite garden team-ups this summer has been the cucumber tomato salad. It was one of my favorite filipino things from the table in our house in Gingoog. It has to be the coolest, freshest thing to eat on a warm summer night.
